Another wham! episode of sorts paying homage to alien abduction. Also the first time we get to see the new Earth Alliance Omega Class destroyer in action. (Much more will be seen of these ships in the third season as well as the fourth season.) Note the dream sequences that Sheridan experiences as they foreshadow elements for events yet to come in the story. There are still a few aspects of the dream that have yet to be expanded upon. Who is the second woman in the dream (Ivanova again) and what is the crow and pigeon all about? Why does Sheridan see himself on the ledge next to Garibaldi? Sheridan’s new Narn friend would return in the third season and become a recurring character who works for G’Kar. Why doesn’t the Narn cruiser appear to be returning fire on the Centauri cruisers when it opens the jump gate? Possibly too much of an energy drain.

The President’s doctor goes on the run after obtaining evidence regarding the plot to assassinate then President Santiago. Bernie Casey guess stars as an Earth Gov Security Agent. The evidence shows up in a third season episode. Sheridan “Star Killer” gets framed for the murder of a Minbari Warrior Caste member in a character episode about Minbari culture and codes of honor. The departed Caitlin Brown (original Na’toth) guess stars as the Earth Alliance lawyer. Londo saves Sheridan’s bacon by mentioning a previous plot point about him and Lennier and the poker game incident. Word has it that she may return in some form for the fifth season. There is a connection with what Lennier does in this episode and what happened in the fourth season episode “Rumors, Bargains And Lies.”

A reporter visits the station and the entire episode is presented in the form of a documentary just like an old M.A.S.H. episode. This is a great primer episode for anyone new to the series. It effectively brings people up to date on many aspects of the series excluding the Shadows, of course. It tells us who all the major players are and what their motivations are. This is the way we tend to envision space battles. Two dreadnoughts slugging it out blasting each other until one is vanquished. So very different from the battles we see in Star Trek as there is no time to invoke any type of evasive patterns. The two ships adapt to each other too quickly. Watch the near propaganda style of the Psi Corp commercial and the not so hidden subliminal message. The second episode pits Sheridan against Morden and brings us all up to speed on who the Shadows are. (Once more presented as exposition only.) A chance to redo these two episodes upcoming. Obviously Kosh is right about the pronunciation of the planet in question, but why does everyone else call it “Zaa Ha Doom?” Vir Cotto does his waving routine to Morden in this episode when Morden asks Vir what it is that he wants. Vir gets his wish five shows into season four thanks to Londo.

Captain Sheridan gets introduced to the backstory of Babylon 4 in a cheap backhanded sort of way by having Garibaldi mention it to him off hand and then have him travel to the restricted sector of space to return an entity to its home in the temporal rift. We also get to indirectly see the reopening of a particular plot point. This will be the same time rift that the White Star will use to travel in time to fight the Shadows as seen in the “War Without End” episode in the third season. Actually the “A” storyline, Londo “Great Maker” Mollari realizes the true price for standing with the forces of darkness in this sub plot about Centauri Houses and nobility. The death of an entire race of people (Markabs) to be touched upon later in the third season premiere is the subject of the second episode. The good doctor finds the cure, but it is too late for the patient. The writers like doing this to the doctor quite a bit. Hard to believe that JMS would kill off an entire race of aliens just so that Sheridan has a jumpgate to use to kill a Shadow vessel in the next season.
